The book 'Charcoal' is an ode to the oldest drawing material we know. An enthusiastic account of the search for the history and making process of
charcoal.
Until the nineteenth century, there were many more types of charcoal than there are today, and people knew exactly for which part of a drawing they should be used. Drawings were made with linden charcoal because of its soft tone, or 'oil charcoal' was used to prevent smearing. Nowadays little is known about this and charcoal from the willow and sometimes from the grape is mainly available in the art supplies store. Research by visual artist Lisanne Sloots has led to new 'old' types of fired charcoal, recorded and made visible in this book. The carefully designed book 'Charcoal' is a gem that reads like a love story. Both the illustrations and images of the author's drawings were made with the author's own fired charcoal. An overview of the different types of wood, the color nuances and their way of drawing are discussed in detail. As well as the practical side of burning charcoal yourself. 'Charcoal' is the book for anyone who wants to know more about the basic drawing materials with which every drawing student starts at the academy.
